On February 25th, HMD Global unveiled 5 new Nokia devices: the Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6, Nokia 1 and Nokia 8110.
Nokia 8 Sirocco
The 8 Sirocco is HMD Global’s designated flagship device. Following the popular trend of bezel-less screens as featured in the Samsung Galaxy S9, the 8 Sirocco sports a 5.5” edge-to-edge display with minimal bezels, capable of displaying media at 2K (2560 x 1440) on a p-OLED panel. Powered by the Snapdragon 835 chip, the Sirocco 8 performance is on par with competing flagship devices including the Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, HTC U11 and Sony Xperia XZ Premium. When compared to the previous Snapdragon 821 chip, the 835 chip offers a 30% increase in efficiency, 27% higher performance, and is 40% less battery-consuming. Further specs include 6GB of RAM and a whopping 128GB of storage as standard. The cameras have Carl Zeiss optics with the main snapper having a dual-camera system (12MP and 13MP) while the front facer is 5MP. Finally, other features include an always-on-display, 3,260mAh battery and USB-C charging.
Nokia 7 Plus
Powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core processor (Snapdragon 660), with 4GB of RAM/64GB, and expandable memory up to 256GB, despite not being a flagship device, the 7 Plus definitely offers a happy medium. Slightly larger than the 8 Sirocco, the 6-inch screen is encased in a 158.4 x 75.6 x 8.0mm aluminium body with copper edges. Impressively, the rear-camera features two lenses 12MP and 13MP, capable of optical zoom and low-light snaps. The front facing camera is a massive 16MP in comparison. Both cameras have Carl Zeiss optics. Further features include the latest version of Android – Oreo 8.0, a 3,800mAh battery and rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.
The second-generation Nokia 6 is claimed by Nokia to be 60% faster than its predecessor. Featuring a 5.5” display, 2.2GHz octa-core processor (Snapdragon 630) with either 3GB RAM/32GB or 4GB storage RAM/64GB storage (microSD up to 128GB). The main camera snaps pictures with 16MP while the front-facer has 8MP using famed camera manufacturer Carl Zeiss’ optics. Further features include a 3,000mAh battery, USB-C charging and a rear fingerprint sensor.
The Nokia 1 is a low-range smartphone, ideal for those who want a reliable phone for its basic functions. The Nokia 1 is powered by a MediaTek MT6737M 2.2GHz quad-core processor and has just 8GB of storage, however this can be expanded by 128GB with a microSD card. It has a 4.5-inch screen IPS 480p screen, removable 2,150mAh battery, Android Oreo (Go edition) and headphone jack.
After the previous success of the revamped 3310, it’s no surprise the Nokia 8110, iconic for its appearance in the Matrix, has now received an update. The sliding device is available in black or yellow, revealing a T9 keypad under its 4.5-inch 480p screen. The 8110 runs on the latest version of Android – 8.0 Oreo from the box and features a 2,150mAh battery. Powered by a 2.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal memory, the 8110 may not be the best for specs but is guaranteed appreciation by all those feeling nostalgic.
